The term, In perpetuity, as an approach to fundraising, is coined from the two flagship development plans produced for Christ Church, Oxford, which have generated many years of major giving. Perpetuity signifies an emphasis on permanent solutions, beyond just firefighting immediate needs and problems as they arise.
The starting proposition is that a compelling case for support is the kernel from which high value fundraising will grow and continue. That means a professionally devised, financial plan which is holistic to the whole institution, over an extended time horizon, and typically seeks to incorporate endowment into the long term funding mix. An In perpetuity case, therefore, will be expressed in a language with which prospective donors are already familiar in their own professional capacities.
The input of an experienced case author is invaluable when embarking on fundraising for the first time; but also can raise the bar for those with already established development offices. Whilst a quality plan of this sort will lay out a roadmap for early campaigns, there is a much wider benefit for fully mature departments, in terms of dedicated time and specialty skills.
Understanding what makes an institution tick, its individual qualities and purposes, is key to presenting a fundraising case that will truly add value. This is not to be a bland consultancy document, but rather a living plan that brings together all stakeholders into a common purpose of philanthropic support. To this end I will spend productive time, working in situ with the development team, and other key influencers, to absorb its character and participate in the vision.
The finished case constitutes a vehicle for continuing discussion with, and amongst, prospective benefactors and stakeholders; it is not a stand-alone appeal to be digested and soon discarded. Understanding how to formulate a solicitation around the document comes with experience and by example. Where appropriate, I can offer an extended period for introducing the case to key donors (existing and potential); and working with the development team to maximise its return.
